Born to Run

"In the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American dream,

At night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines,

Sprung from cages out on highway nine,

Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin' out over the line,

H-Oh, Baby this town rips the bones from your back,

It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap,

We gotta get out while we're young,

'Cause tramps like us, baby we were Born to Run”

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run

Just read the book, “Born to Run” as a recommendation from one of my running buddies. It mentions a drink called iskiate, made from water, lime juice, chia seeds, and agave. It is a natural energy drink that the Tarahumara tribe from Mexico drink - they are legendary in 100+ mile runs, including the Leadville 100 mile run in Colorado.

I’ve been driving it for a couple of weeks and really enjoy it. Here’s a simple recipe - 25 oz. water, 1 tbsp chia seeds, the juice from 1/2-1 lime, hit of agave (according to taste). A shaker or large water bottle that you can shake works best because the seeds settle.

June started out with a bang! Over 75 people attended Northside Running Group’s inaugural run on June 1st. Unofficially, the group started at the beginning of May, so we are including late May runs along with the June masterpieces that some runners were able to accomplish.

The group is now over 125 and growing every day. Congrats Leanne on your dream coming to fruition.

Summer is here and there are not as many opportunities to run organized fun runs as there are in the fall and winter, but we still had a few Rockstars in our mist.

Rockstar, Derek Bailey, completed Grandma’s Marathon in under 3 hours, (2:59:24 - 6:51 pace), not his personal best, but close. Congrats!! Is it safe to assume that there were no Fireball shots taken before this race? ;)

Leanne, Alicia & Marta ran the SWA 5K (I really wanted to do this one because I love SWA), but I had another obligation. They killed it! All placing in their respective age groups! Way to go!! Leanne finished the SWA 5K in 25:34, good enough for 4th in her AG. Leanne also finished the Memorial Day 5K in 24:01, awesome enough to take 1st overall in female masters, (who knew she was that old…). for those that don’t know, Masters is for all runners that are 65+ years old and up. ;) Ok, sometimes I exaggerate a little, Leanne is not that old (I believe Masters is actually 40+, but don’t hold me to it.

Our Lil’ Firecracker, Marta Mixa, completed the Dallas Love Field 5K in 29:28 and finished 3rd place in her AG. Alicia Anderson (aka - Flash) completed the SWA 5K in 23:17 finishing 1st place in her AG.

Mike Kuykendall completed several Tri’s including his personal best triathlon with guidance from Northside Tri-coach, Jessy.

1. Silverlake Sprint Triathlon. 14.8 miles (400 meter swim, 10 mi bike, 5k run) Finish Time: 1:09:16 Place 2nd in Age Group. PR’s the distance by 8 minutes 47 seconds and this course by 12 mins, 46 seconds.

2. Sylvan Beach Sprint Triathlon 15.5 mi. (500 mtr swim, 12 mi. bike, 5k run) Finish Time: 1:22:02. PR’d this distance by 13 mins 27 seconds. PR’s this course by 21 mins 29 seconds. Took 4th in my age group.

Yanira Montes completed the Memorial Day 10K in just under an hour in 59:59.

Greg Nettleton finished second in his AG in the St. Louis All-American 5K with a time of 22:46 (7:19 pace) and won an apple pie! Thus negating all the calories he burned during his race.

Meredith finished Gleannloch Farms Memorial Day 10k

Time: 44:09

1st in age group 30-39

4th overall (crosses with Mayra, so technically 3rd overall)

First race since Boston!

Boston Finisher with 3:49 after a broken pelvic bone 3 months before Boston.

Nikki Cannon was extremely active the months of May and June completing 3 races.

5/27: Memorial Day 10k 44:40 3rd OA Female

6/2: Run Houston Clear Lake 47:18 2nd AG

6/29: Run Revel Mt. Hood 3:22:32 PR & BQ

Martha Modisette also completed 3 races in May and June. She completed her first 5 mile (The Independence 8K) in 1:05:11. She also finished the Running of the Blueberries 5K in 38:21 & the Memorial Day 5K in 35:42, her PR.

Congrats to all! Those mentioned as well as those that were not.

With over 125 members in this group and growing, we greatly apologize if we missed mentioning you this month. Perhaps you missed the post to send in your results or technology failed and for some reason or another we didn’t receive your results (my phone crashed, and I lost all my messages & photos).

Please know if we missed you, it was unintentional and if you will please send to my email andrew@AndrewToddSmith.com (please do not text, messenger, smoke signals or any other way as it just too many places to search). Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Andrew Smith
