There’s hungry… and then there’s real estate hungry.
I’m talking about the kind of hungry that makes you willing to eat soup with a fork.
Yeah. THAT hungry.
I first heard that phrase from Kenny Smith on the TV show Inside the NBA, and it stuck with me instantly. He was describing the type of players he wanted on his team—the grinders. The competitors. The ones who would show up early, stay late, and do whatever it took to win.

And honestly? That mindset has everything to do with real estate.
Because in this business, talent helps… but hunger separates the top producers from everyone else.
Every year, I sit down with hundreds of agents and ask them one simple question:
“How much money do you want to make next year?”
The most common answer?“$100,000.”
Sounds great. Nice round number. Feels successful.
But then I ask the follow-up question that changes everything:
“Why is that number important to you?”
And that’s where the room gets quiet.
Because the agents who actually hit their goals—and usually crush them—always have a deeper reason.
Their “why” isn’t surface-level.
It’s not:
“Because six figures sounds cool.”
“Because I’ve never done it before.”
“Because everyone else says that’s the goal.”
No.
The agents who win have something pulling them forward so hard they can’t ignore it.
Over the last 28 years, I’ve coached, trained, and worked alongside countless agents. The ones who made it big weren’t always the smartest. They weren’t always the most polished. And they definitely weren’t always the most experienced.
But they were hungry.
Some were trying to keep the lights on. Some were desperate to give their family a better life. Some were tired of living paycheck to paycheck. Some were sick of watching other agents succeed while they sat on the sidelines “thinking about it.”
Those agents had a fire under them.
And when you’re truly hungry, you stop making excuses. You stop waiting for perfect conditions. You stop worrying about looking silly.
You pick up the fork and figure it out anyway.
That’s the difference.
