Today is May 4th—“May the Fourth Be With You.”

Now I’ll be honest… I’m not a big Star Wars guy. Never really got into Star Trek either.
Yes, I watched the original movies growing up, but I was more of a fan of William Shatner as Denny Crane on Boston Legal than Captain Kirk.

But here’s what I do love…
Finding a way to turn attention into business.
Pokemon Go
About 10 years ago, Pokémon Go took over the world.
People were walking into walls, parks were packed, and everyone—from kids to professionals—was glued to their phones chasing virtual characters.
Was I into it? Not at all.
But I didn’t need to be.
I was heading to a real estate convention and had a simple thought:
“How do I ride this wave without becoming a fan?”
So here was the play:
Bought a Pikachu costume on eBay for about $300
Hired my daughter to wear it
Set up and started taking photos of agents posing with Pikachu
It was instant chaos—in a good way.
Agents were laughing, lining up, getting creative. One guy even pretended to arrest Pikachu and sent the photo to his kid saying, “I caught him.”

But here’s where it turned into a business move…
I created a sign that said:
“Pikachu says send Houston, TX referrals to The Smith Team”
And I made sure it showed up in the bottom corner of every photo.
Not pushy. Not awkward. Just present.
Those photos ended up on hundreds of agents’ social media pages—all tagged, all shared, all carrying our message into their sphere.
Low cost. Massive reach.

Fast forward one year…
A new Star Wars: The Force Awakens release had everyone buzzing.
Had I seen it? Nope.
Didn’t matter.
I ordered a Chewbacca costume off Amazon and wore it to another convention.
Same result:
Lines of agents waiting for pictures
Social media flooded with posts
Our contact info quietly riding along in every single image
And here’s the part most agents miss…
We stayed top of mind for referrals long after the event ended.
The Real Lesson
You don’t need to:
Be an expert
Follow every trend
Or even like what’s popular
You just need to be resourceful.
Most agents are sitting around waiting for:
Better leads
A better market
More confidence
Meanwhile, the agents who win are asking:
“How can I use what’s already getting attention… and attach my business to it?”
That’s it.
That’s the game.
